Blu Matter Project wants to lift people out of depression… one sweaty yoga mat at a time! We are a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to offer a new and holistic approach to support people living with Depression and/or Bipolar Disorder that is rooted in the practice of yoga.
We firmly believe in the research that suggests a correlation between an increased sense of well-being and a regular yoga practice 1. Our goal is to help those living with a mental illness discover this shift for themselves by offering regular yoga classes through our partnering studios at no cost.
We exist because we believe yoga may allow some to find a sense of peace inside the struggle of mental illness. We will help as many people as we can discover the power of yoga by connecting them with some of the most amazing studios Toronto has to offer.
Intellectually supported by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and empowered by generous donations and long term financial partners, Blu Matter Project is an innovative not-for-profit organization that provides qualified applicants with the opportunity to discover the benefits yoga without the financial burden.
At a time when we are witnessing various cuts to mental health care planning, Blu Matter Project is stepping in to help support this gap. We are not just a billboard “raising awareness” without action; our program facilitates real change by encouraging individuals to find a sense of balance without judgement through their yoga practice.
As discussions surrounding the lived experience of mental illness continue to surface, Blu Matter Project will offer concrete support to those living with a mental illness through the practice of yoga. We believe this is the next step in this transformation.
WHY THE NAME BLU MATTER PROJECT?
Blu – not only refers to the idea of “being blue” but being also refers to concepts of “tranquility,” and “calm.”
Blu Matter – is a our take on the concept of “brain matter.”
Matter – is a foundational word for the Blu Matter Project. When it comes to Depression and/or Bipolar Disorder “it matters,” “YOU matter.”
Project – was chosen because this is an ongoing project. We will continue to work on this project to raise awareness and to engage in conversation surrounding the lived experience of Depression and Bipolar disorder.
